A Message from Dr. Stephen J. ScholandWelcome to our website. Here we hope you can learn about our mission to reduce rabies suffering in the world. We advocate a three-pronged approach including education dissemination, support for research and medical intervention. We hope this website will serve your needs regarding rabies through the information presented here. We have downloadable educational materials in our Education section including video clips of human rabies cases as well as Powerpoint lectures for instruction. I'd also like to invite you to visit www.kids4rabiesfreeworld.com, a special site devoted especially to educating children about rabies and rabies eradication efforts. World Rabies Day has been declared by the CDC and OIE as occurring this September 8, 2007. On this date, multiple events around the world will take place in order to raise awareness of this dreaded disease. Rabies Free World is focusing its efforts on a program "Swim for a rabies free Philippines" in partnership with the Philippine Department of Health, the Bureau of Animal Health and Industry and other local organizations. The Philippines is badly affected by rabies, with several hundred recorded human deaths per year. Thousands more are afflicted with the fear, pain and suffering of anti-rabies treatment following animal bite injuries. Additionally, countless animals suffer from rabies needlessly. Rabies can be prevented at the most basic level by dog and cat vaccination, which costs little more than one dollar. Experts have estimated it would only cost about 8 million dollars to eradicate rabies from the Philippines. What is lacking is global awareness of the scope of this problem. World Rabies Day plans to focus attention on the rabies problem, so we can rid ourselves of this scourge once and for all. More details about the Swim for a rabies free Philippines program will become available shortly. Raising awareness of rabies is one of the major directives for RFW. For more than four years now, we have worked hard to help reduce rabies suffering through education, outreach, support for research and targeted medical intervention.
